Designing for the socially anxious: Turning hesitation into connection
A mobile app that helps users overcome social anxiety through guided interactions, gamification and AI-assisted communication.
Role:
UI/UX Designer
Scope:
UI/UX, Mobile app, Interaction design, Behaviour design
Timeline:
3 - 4 months

Problem & Design Challenge
PROBLEM
Most social apps are built for confident users.
But what about those who hesitate before sending a message…
overthink every interaction… and fear being judged?
Pain points:
Anxiety in initiating conversations.
Overwhelming UI & too many features.
Fear of judgment in social interactions.
KEY INSIGHT: Users don’t struggle to find people. They struggle to start.
DESIGN CHALLENGE
Social anxiety is a behavioral barrier, not a feature gap. Users don’t need more features they need an environment that reduces pressure and builds confidence gradually.

How might I design a social experience that reduces emotional friction and helps users gradually build confidence to connect with others?
Success Criteria & Constraints
SUCCESS CRITERIA
The design would be successful if it could:
Reduce hesitation in initiating interactions.
Enable low-pressure social engagement.
Improve usability for a wide age group (18–60).
Create a sense of progress and confidence over time.
CONSTRAINTS
No real user data or live product metrics (concept project).
Designing for diverse emotional states not just functional needs.
Balancing simplicity vs engagement (avoiding overwhelming UI).
Introducing new behaviors without increasing cognitive load
Strategy
STRATEGY
Reduce emotional friction
Through simplified UI, navigation and guided onboarding experience.
Enable low-risk interactions
Designed features that don’t require immediate social commitment.
Build confidence through progress
Introduced gamification (streaks, tiers, milestones).
Support expression with assistance
AI-assisted username and caption generation.
Key Decisions
KEY DECISIONS
Introduced “Hello” as a Low-pressure interaction
Why: Users struggled to initiate conversations.

What I did: Created a one-tap “Hello” feature to reduce friction.

Outcome: Encouraged first-step interactions without social pressure.

Gamified Social Confidence
Why: Users needed motivation to step out of their comfort zone.

What I did: Added progress indicators on post feed screen and a dedicated "Achievements" screen with:
- Daily quests
- Streaks
- Tier-based progression

Outcome: Turned social interaction into a reward-driven journey.
AI-Assisted Content Creation
Why: Users overthink what to write.

What I did: Enabled fun AI-generated usernames and captions.

Outcome: Reduced cognitive load, increased creative expression and confidence.

Image: Floating Action Button (FAB) nav menu
Simplified Navigation via FAB
Why: Complex navigation increases anxiety and confusion.

What I did: Centralized actions using a movable floating action button (FAB) with menu notification bubble and highlights.

Outcome: Faster, more intuitive interaction flow.
System Improvements
SYSTEM IMPROVEMENTS
Layered interaction: Passive (content view), Low-risk (Hello), Active (chat & post).
Engagement system: Gamification tied to real social behaviors.
AI assistance system: Onboarding and content creation.
Navigation system: FAB as a central control hub reducing multi-tab dependency.
Trade - Offs
TRADE-OFFS
Simplicity vs Feature Richness
Chose minimal UI over adding more social features. May feel less engaging for power users (Risk). Reduced overwhelm for target users (Benefit).
Gamification vs Authentic Interaction
Introduced rewards to encourage behavior, tied rewards to meaningful actions.
AI Assistance vs User Authenticity
AI helps users express themselves. May reduce authenticity (Risk). Kept AI optional and user-controlled (Solution).
Guided Experience vs User Freedom
Structured onboarding for ease. With limits to exploration it reduces anxiety for new users.
Impact
IMPACT
While this is a conceptual project, the design is expected to influence key behavioral outcomes
User Impact
Reduced hesitation in initiating interactions.
Increased confidence in social engagement.
Lower cognitive load for users.
Product Impact
Higher onboarding completion rates.
Increased user engagement through gamification.
Improved retention via progressive interaction model.
The experience shifts social interaction from pressure-driven to progress-driven.
Key Learnings & Next Opportunities
KEY LEARNINGS
Designing for emotional challenges requires behavioral thinking, not just UI design.
Small interaction changes can significantly influence user confidence.
Gamification is effective only when aligned with user psychology.
Simplicity is critical when designing for diverse user groups.
NEXT OPPORTUNITIES
Validate effectiveness of “Hello” feature.
Measure impact of AI assistance on engagement.
Conduct additional usability studies with broader demographics.
